With the arrival of Scarlet & Violet 151 this September, we’ll have a handful of new deck archetypes joining the fray. As always, some deck archetypes are better than others—some are meme tier and some are merely playable, fun decks without much competitive promise. Lists below are very rough drafts and are intended as a starting place for testing, not as tournament-ready deck lists. Consider creating and using proxies to test cards you don’t already own prior to making any purchases.

Charizard ex

Illus. PLANETA Mochizuki

BASIC STRATEGY

Build your board up by getting a Pidgey or two into play alongside as many Charmander as you can, evolving your Charmander into Charizard ex from Obsidian Flames as quickly as possible with the help of Forest Seal Stone and Pidgeot ex. Accelerate the Fire Energy via Charizard ex’s Infernal Reign Ability to either Charizard ex, attacking with either as the opportunity presents itself.

KEY CARDS

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

  • Delphox V LOR 27 to make use of its Magical Fire attack for its bench-sniping potential. Magical Fire reads, “120 damage. Put 2 Energy attached to this Pokémon in the Lost Zone. This attack also "does 120 damage to 1 of your opponent's Benched Pokémon. (Don't apply Weakness and Resistance for Benched Pokémon.)

Alakazam ex

Illus. Mirsuhiro Arita

BASIC STRATEGY

Slow down your opponent’s setup with Klefki’s Mischievous Lock Ability and stall them out with Mimikyu’s Safeguard Ability. Further slow them down with Path to the Peak. Meanwhile, build up to Alakazam ex by benching Abra and evolving them up via Rare Candy. With Klefki, Mimikyu, or Snorlax in the Active Spot as appropriate, attack with Alakazam ex’s Dimensional Hand attack, which does 120 damage and can be used even when Alakazam ex is on the Bench. As needed, move Alakazam ex to the Active Spot and instead attack with Mind Jack, which does 30 damage for each of your opponent’s Benched Pokémon.

KEY CARDS
