Set List | Visual Set List | Set Highlights | New Archetypes | Selected Proxies

With the arrival of Lost Origin this September, we’ll have a handful of new deck archetypes joining the fray. As always, some deck archetypes are better than others—some are meme tier and some are merely playable, fun decks without much competitive promise. Lists below are very rough drafts and are intended as a starting place for testing, not as tournament-ready deck lists. Consider creating and using proxies to test cards you don’t already own prior to making any purchases.

Sunflora

Illus. zig

BASIC STRATEGY

Bench Gossifleur, Zorua, and Sunkern, then evolve Sunkern into Sunflora, Gossifleur into Eldegoss, and Zorua into Zoroark. Attack using Sunflora’s Brilliant Beam attack, which does 10 damage plus 70 more damage for each Energy card you discard from your hand—up to 3. As Sunflora are Knocked Out, make use of Zoroark’s Phantom Transformation Ability to swap the Zoroark with a Sunflora in your discard pile. Use Eldegoss’ Cotton Lift Ability to put two Energy cards from your deck into your hand each turn to help guarantee maximum damage on Sunflora’s attack.

KEY CARDS

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

  • Mightyena ASR 96 as an option to help counter prominent Darkness-weak archetypes, like Mew VMAX and Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX.

  • Slowbro PGO 20 to make it easier to wrap up a game if you slip a bit in the Prize trade.

  • Cherrim BST 8 and Grass Energy in place of Water Energy to make the deck less reliant on Twin Energy, allowing you to push more heavily in the direction of mostly or entirely all basic Energy, which are both easier to recover and to attach.

  • Nessa as an option to recover both Radiant Greninja and basic Water Energy.

Serperior VSTAR

Illus. PLANETA Mochizuki

BASIC STRATEGY

Evolve Serperior V into Serperior VSTAR to prepare it to attack and Kricketot into Kricketune to take advantage of its Swelling Tune Ability, which reads, “Your [G] Pokémon in play, except any Kricketune, get +40 HP. You can't apply more than 1 Swelling Tune Ability at a time.” Further increase the difficulty of knocking out your own Serperior VSTAR with Big Charm and Radiant Gardevoir whose ability reduces the damage done to your Pokémon by Pokémon V by 20. Attack using Serperior VSTAR’s Regal Blender attack, which does 190 damage and gives you the opportunity to move any Energy cards attach to your Pokémon to your other Pokémon in any way you like. When advantageous, use Serperior VSTAR’s Star Winder attack, which does 60 damage for each Energy card attached to Serperior VSTAR.

KEY CARDS

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

  • 1 copy of Pokémon Breeder’s Nuturing to make it easier to get both Kricketune and Serperior VSTAR into play on the same turn.

  • Gardenia’s Vigor as an option to draw a couple of cards while also attaching any up to 2 Grass Energy you draw into or have in your hand to 1 of your Benched Pokémon.

  • Turffield Stadium as an additional means of finding Kricketune and Serperior VSTAR.

  • Altaria SIT 143 to make use of its Magical Echo attack, which can be used to move all damage counters from 1 of your heavily-damaged Serperior VSTAR to your opponent’s Active Pokémon, potentially with 1 copy of Altaria EVS 106 to be able to take advantage of its Tempting Tune Ability, which reads, “Once during your turn, you may search your deck for a Supporter card, reveal it, shuffle your deck, then put that card on top of it.”

Braixen

Illus. Ligton

BASIC STRATEGY

Bench Espurr and Fennekin and evolve Fennekin into Braixen so that you can attack with its Flare Parade attack, which does 60 damage for each Serena card in your discard pile. To get Serena in the discard pile, use Meowstic’s on-evolution ability, Inviting Ear, which lets you search your deck for any two Supporter cards and put them into your hand. Play Serena itself, which has you discard up to three cards from your hand and then draw until you have five cards in your hand, or otherwise discard Serena with the decks many discarding options, including Ultra Ball, Quick Ball, Professor’s Research, and PokéStop.

Pikachu

Illus. Souichirou Gunjima

BASIC STRATEGY

Attack using the various pikaclones in order, beginning with Togedemaru whose Togedash attack does 10 damage and if you get a heads on the coin flip, prevents your opponent from taking a Prize card if it is Knocked Out during your opponent’s next turn. Continue the chain with Dedenne’s Dedeshort, which does 60 damage and Paralyzes your opponent’s Active Pokémon. Further continue the chain with either Pikachu’s Pikastrike attack which does 200 damage if your Dedenne attacked the previous turn or with Morpeko’s Pekobomber, which does 60 damage to all of your opponent’s Pokémon if your Dedenne attacked during your previous turn.

KEY CARDS

Regieleki VMAX

Illus. N Design Inc.

BASIC STRATEGY

Play down Vikavolt V and attach either a basic Lightning Energy or a Speed Lightning Energy to it. After discarding a basic Water Energy with any of the deck’s various discarding options, use Melony to attach the Water Energy to Vikavolt and attack using its Paralyzing Bolt attack, which does 50 damage and locks your opponent out of the use of any Item cards during their next turn. Whilst preparing your Vikavolt V to attack, bench and evolve Regieleki V into Regieleki VMAX to benefit from its Transistor Ability, which boosts the damage of the attacks of your basic Lightning Pokémon by 30—an ability that stacks.

KEY CARDS

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

  • Raihan as alternative to Melony for situations in which a Water Energy is already attached to a Vikavolt V, but a Lightning Energy is needed. Also useful as an out to basically any non-Supporter card in deck, including Choice Band.

  • Raikou V BRS 48 as an alternate attacker that can ramp the damage of its two-energy attack faster than Vikavolt V.

  • Double Turbo Energy to make it easier to attack with Regieleki VMAX, if necessary.

  • Training Court as an option to recover Lightning Energy.

Gardevoir

Illus. kodama

BASIC STRATEGY

Play down a Ralts and evolve it into a the Kirlia from Chilling Reign. Use its Mirage Step attack which reads, “Search your deck for up to 3 Kirlia and put them onto your Bench. Then, shuffle your deck.” Use that attack to get your Kirlia with the Refinement Ability into play and either evolve your Mirage Step Kirlia into Gallade to use its Swirling Slice attack, which does 160 damage and has you move an Energy attached to it to 1 of your Benched Pokémon. Alternatively, evolve the Kirlia into Gardevoir and use its Brainwave attack, which does 60 damage plus 30 more damage for each Psychic Energy attached to the attacking Gardevoir. Get additional Energy into play using Raihan, and, when the opportunity strikes, make use of Radiant Charizard’s Excited Heart Ability to sharply reduce the attack cost of Combustion Blast, which does 250 damage before any damage modifiers.

KEY CARDS

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

  • Cresselia CRE 64 both to take advantage of its Crescent Glow attack to help set up energy to boost the damage of your Gardevoir’s attacks and to use its own Photon Laser attack in case of emergencies.

  • Galarian Articuno EVS 63 as a basic Pokémon that can both boost Gardevoir’s damage via its Cruel Charge Ability and can snipe your opponent’s weakened or weak Benched Pokémon with its Psylaser attack, which does 120 damage to 1 of your opponent’s Pokémon.

Ursaluna V

Illus. 5ban Graphics

BASIC STRATEGY

Play down Ursaluna V and bulk it up with Cape of Toughness, Stone Fighting Energy, and V Guard Energy. Reduce the damage it takes from the attacks of your opponent’s Pokémon with its own Hard Coat Ability and with the help of Lake Acuity and Radiant Gardevoir’s Loving Veil Ability, which reads, “All of your Pokémon take 20 less damage from attacks from your opponent's Pokémon V (after applying Weakness and Resistance).” Heal away damage with Team Yell Towel and Sweet Honey. Accelerate Energy to Ursaluna V with Gutsy Pickaxe and take knockouts using Ursaluna V’s Peat Shoulder attack, which does 220 damage minus 10 damage for each damage counter on it.

Regidrago VSTAR

Illus. PLANETA Yamashita

BASIC STRATEGY

Discard your non-Regidrago Dragon-typed Pokémon. Bench and evolve Regidrago V into Regidrago VSTAR, then use its Apex Dragon attack, which lets you copy the attack of any Dragon-type Pokémon in your discard pile for the cost of two Grass Energy and one Fire Energy. When possible, attack copying Dragonite’s Energy Hurricane attack, which does 180 damage and lets you search your deck for 3 Basic Energy cards and attach them to your Pokémon in any way you like. Continue copying other the attacks of discarded Dragon-type Pokémon as beneficial: attack using Goodra’s Rolling Iron to do 200 damage and take 80 less during your opponent’s next turn, attack using Giratina VSTAR’s Lost Impact which does 280 damage and you send two Energy attached to your Pokémon to the Lost Zone.

KEY CARDS

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

  • An alternate engine in place of the Lost engine, using Gardenia’s Vigor and either the Inteleon, Mew, Bibarel, or Kirlia engines to support the deck in finding the cards it needs to operate.

  • Duraludon VMAX EVS 123 to give Regidrago VSTAR the option to copy its G-Max Pulverization attack which does 220 damage and isn’t affected by any effects on your opponent's Active Pokémon.

  • Garchomp V ASR 117 to give Regidrago VSTAR the option to copy its Sonic Strike attack, which reads, “Discard 3 Energy from this Pokémon. This attack does 220 damage to 1 of your opponent's Pokémon. (Don't apply Weakness and Resistance for Benched Pokémon.)

  • Choice Belt to boost Regidrago VSTAR’s damage output, to help it hit key numbers when attacking with Hisuian Goodra VSTAR’s Rolling Star attack.

  • Flygon V BRS 106 to give Regidrago VSTAR the option to copy its Draconic Impulse attack, which reads, “If your opponent's Active Pokémon is a Pokémon VMAX, this attack does 160 more damage, and discard 3 Energy from this Pokémon.”

Lugia VSTAR

Illus. Mitsuhiro Arita

BASIC STRATEGY

Get two Archeops into the discard pile while benching and eventually evolving Lugia V into Lugia VSTAR. Prioritize getting two Archeops into play using Lugia’s Summoning Star VSTAR Power, which puts two Colorless Pokémon from your discard pile directly onto your bench. Use Archeops’ Primal Turbo Ability and manual attachments to power up Lugia VSTAR’s Tempest Dive attack, which does 220 damage and grants you the option to discard a Stadium card in play. Boost the damage of Tempest dive with Choice Belt and Powerful Colorless Energy, all while making your own Lugia VSTAR more difficult to Knock Out with the help of Radiant Gardevoir’s Loving Veil Ability, which reduces the damage Pokémon V do to your Pokémon by 20, and further reduce the damage Lugia VSTAR takes with V Guard Energy, which reduces the damage Pokémon V do to Lugia by 30.

KEY CARDS

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

  • Path to the Peak as an out against both Duraludon VMAX and an additional out against Collapsed Stadium.

  • Lugia VIV 132 as a single prize attacking option to abuse its Wind Pressure attack which does 250 base damage if your opponent has 6 or more cards in their hand.

  • Lost Vacuum to deal with tools like Cape of Toughness and Big Charm and hostile Stadium cards, like Collapsed Stadium.

  • Yveltal SHF 46 in conjunction with Aurora Energy to take devastating KOs against Pokémon regardless of their HP.

  • Leon to further boost the damage of Tempest Dive.

  • Professor Burnet as a Supporter that can be searched for with Lumineon V’s Luminous Sign Ability to help guarantee the two Archeops make it to the discard pile early in the game.

Ho-oh V

Illus. AKIRA EGAWA

BASIC STRATEGY

Using the Comfey engine, work toward getting 7 cards in the Lost Zone to activate Mirage Gate and use it to power up Ho-oh V and its Rainbow Burn attack, which does 100 damage plus 30 damage for each different type of Basic Energy attached to it. Alternatively, ideally with Diancie in the Active Spot, use Ho-oh V’s Flames of Rebirth Ability, which reads, “Once during your turn, if this Pokémon is in your discard pile, you may put this Pokémon onto your Bench and attach up to 4 basic Energy cards from your discard pile to this Pokémon. If you use this Ability, your turn ends.”

KEY CARDS

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

  • Snorlax LOR 143 to serve as an alternate single prize attacker that doesn’t readily fall to an opposing Cramorant.

  • PokéStop, both to dig a little deeper, and to help get basic Energy cards into the discard pile.

  • Building Ho-oh V as a component of an Arceus VSTAR archetype.

  • Using Ho-oh V as a means of pooling Energy cards into play for a deck built around Origin Forme Dialga VSTAR.
